Working in partnership to deliver the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for occupational competence

All apprenticeship standards, irrespective of level, comprise three elements – knowledge, skills and behaviours. They are gained through a combination of off-the-job training and practical experience in the workplace.

Knowledge - this is the information, technical detail, and ‘know-how’ someone needs to have and understand to successfully carry out the duties relevant to the occupation. A L4 Marketing Executive for example will need to know and understand the 7Ps of marketing.

Skills - the practical application of knowledge needed for the occupation. These have to be gained through off-the-job training or experience. Skills are not a repetition of duties or tasks. For example, a L4 Professional Accounting Technician has to be able to “create and interpret information and show how that information can be used most effectively to add value to the organisation”.

Behaviours - behaviours are mind-sets, attitudes or approaches required for competence. They tend to be transferable so they are similar across apprenticeship standards. Examples include resilience and continuous improvement, agile & flexible and embracing change.

At COPA Apprenticeships we work in partnership with other training providers and employers to develop and deliver what’s required to ensure competence against an apprenticeship standard. We have particular capabilities in areas such as marketing, finance, leadership and management, as well as years of experience of managing apprenticeship programmes across a wide range of occupational areas.

We’re flexible in our approach, for example:

  • We can deliver apprenticeship standards in their entirety – ensuring individuals on programme have the knowledge, skills and competence required to demonstrate competence. We work alongside other training providers with capabilities and competence in standards we don’t offer.
  • We can manage the overall apprenticeship programme – capitalising upon our 40+ years of experience – ensuring compliance with funding and reporting requirements and delivering the skills and behaviours elements of the apprenticeship standards. We work with specialist training providers with capabilities to deliver the knowledge element and, as appropriate, any relevant professional qualification.
